During the 19th century, paisley shawls from India were all the rage in Europe and America. Later, in the early years of the 20th century, women who had inherited their grandmother’s heirloom shawls often refashioned the fabric into dresses and jackets more appropriate for the jazz age. This sheer butterfly-sleeve tunic is made in the same spirit of transformation, and updates a timeless paisley pattern in a contemporary style. Poly georgette with elastic ruching at the waist. Hits at mid-thigh. Camisole not included.

Made in India. Poly georgette. Women’s sizes S (4–6), M (8–10), L (12–14), XL (16–18).

Machine wash.

    Comments about Paisley Flutter Tunic:

I wanted this tunic to wear over blue jeans and a denim skirt. It's perfect. But did have to buy a camisole to wear under it as it is very see through.

      Comments about Paisley Flutter Tunic:

The color was off from the photo...the pale green is really more yellow and the orange it not as vivid. The front piece has a seam where they attempted to match the pattern, but it's not lined up quite right.

I kept the blouse as it was a good price (on sale) and fits well. I was disappointed in the difference from photo to actual item. Instead of the green, vivid orange and browns...it's more cream colored with pale yellow brown and orange (not the vivid orange shown).

The pattern of this silk-modal-blend tunic, called a kurta, is inspired by the museum’s early-19th-century printed fabrics made for trade with Europe. The swirling pattern of paisley—in Farsi called boteh, the word for a young flower or palm leaf—evolved from a traditional Kashmiri design. The Silk Road brought Kashmiri shawls to Europe where they became wildly popular. The Scottish mill that was first able to re-create the intricate design was in Paisley, Scotland, and gave the pattern its English name. This lightweight, 100% cotton, open-front jacket is made in India with an allover paisley pattern and hand-beaded accents. The greens, blues, reds, and pinks evoke the flowers in Kashmir's Shalimar Garden, built by 17th-century Mughal emperor Jahangir and famous for its nightly fountain displays.

Indian textiles have been influencing world fashion for centuries. In the mid-19th century, women clamored for paisley patterns on Kashmiri shawls. In the mid-20th century, the peace-and-love generation popularized bold graphics and Nehru collars. This relaxed tunic updates a ’60s style with a pattern inspired by raindrops on a lake. Semisheer 100% cotton with a split V-neckline and side vents.

The South American Alstroemeria is a genus of brightly colored flowers known as the lily of the Incas. Popular in floral arrangements, the 120-some members of the Alstroemeria family have an interesting trait in that their leaves are upside-down—that is, they twist so that what we see as the top of the leaf is actually the leaf’s underside.

The Punjab region in northern India is brimming with highly creative artisans who make everything from ornate jewelry to detailed needlework bedding and fabric. This classic tunic represents those decorative arts with subtle tone-on-tone embroidery trimming the neck and cuffs and accented by a scattering of beads across the body and tiny bell buttons at the neckline. This embroidered tunic evolved from a typical Punjabi garment called a kameez, a loose cotton shirt with an airy quality to keep you cool. Made in India.

The lacy teardrop shape known as paisley originated in Persia and came to be closely associated with the work of Indian Kashmiri weavers. As trade between Asia and Europe expanded in the 18th century, demand for the pattern was so great that weavers in the town of Paisley, Scotland, created their own version of the design, giving the pattern its Western name. Incorporating these curved and leaflike paisley shapes, our jacket is handcrafted of 100% silk. Artisans working in India embellish each jacket by hand with embroidery and beadwork, guaranteeing that no two will be exactly alike. Fully lined.
