Mountains encircle the tiny African kingdom of Swaziland, including one that resembles a basking crocodile. Atop the mountain is an ancient iron ore mine, and at the foot of the mountain is the village of Ngwenya, the Siswati word for "crocodile." It is here that Swazi artisans breathe life into recycled glass to create these charming interpretations of animals found in southern African grasslands.

All of the items made by this group are 100% recycled glass, mostly soft drink bottles collected from all over the country. Ngwenya Glass partners with local school groups to teach them about conservation and reuse. The children help volunteer for roadside clean-up campaigns, and any glass they turn up gets reused by the artisans. In exchange, Ngwenya Glass contributes to school building materials and also sponsors the soccer team.

Each handcrafted zebra and giraffe has its own unique personality; please accept some variation.

Handblown in Swaziland. 1 3/4"W x 5"H x 4"D.

      Comments about Ngwenya Zebra:

I also bought the giraffe. The fact that these help an African village economy made the purchase all the better.

No one knows how the zebra got his stripes, but there is no doubt this herbivore’s black and white markings are among the most distinctive sights of the African savannah. Not only do zebras stand out in the grassy landscape but much like a human and her fingerprint, each zebra has a unique pattern that helps his herd-mates identify him from a distance. Handmade in Kenya from fast-growing jacaranda wood, this one-of-a-kind end table or stool will brighten any room.

On both land and sea, they fight the odds and the forces of nature to breed, feed, or lead and carry on for future generations. This reader is an introduction to the treacherous trek of the zebra, walrus, and Christmas Island red crab to overcome obstacles that include hungry cheetahs, stinging yellow crazy ants, and even their fellow species to make the often impossible journey of their lives.
