Comments about Civil War Battles Map:

It is a start in the study of the Civil War in order to gain a geographic view of the battles. Of course it is impossible to cover very much of the action in just one map of everything. I expected too much.

    The Untold Civil War
    The Untold Civil War
    (Based on 2 reviews)
    Category: Books/Culture, History and Religion/History

Was Gettysburg a tactical success, or was the outcome determined by a far more mundane factor: access to fresh water? How did the need to spread information about the dead and wounded give rise to the U.S. Postal Service? Did President Lincoln really age so dramatically during the course of the war, or was a rare disease to blame for the shocking difference in images of him from before and during the war? From overlooked elements, such as the role of weather, health, and high emotions, to the world-changing effect of the rise of female workers, to the many "firsts" including the introduction of standard time, pre-sized clothing, canned goods, toilets, and Santa Claus, The Untold Civil War reveals new facets of a seemingly well-known slice of American history, just in time to commemorate its 150th anniversary.

The American Civil War has been called the first modern war. Railroads, the telegraph, steamships, and mass-produced weapons were extensively employed. The practice of total war, developed by Sherman in Georgia, and of trench warfare around Petersburg foreshadowed World War I in Europe. The chronology of the war is a well-told tale. Less well known are the strikingly varied changes in America resulting from the war, including expanded roles for women as factory workers, teachers, nurses, and as some of the war’s most successful spies.

It's a poignant irony in American history that on Independence Day, 1863, not one but two pivotal battles ended in Union victory, marked the high tide of Confederate military fortune, and ultimately doomed the South's effort at secession. But on July 4, 1863, after six months of siege, Ulysses Grant's Union army finally took Vicksburg and the Confederate west.
