With just a touch, the ten bright LEDs inside our Byrd desk globe illuminate to bring even greater clarity and detail to our award-winning cartography. With the same blue ocean coloring of our most popular wall maps, it’s suitable for home, office, and classroom alike. More than 4,000 place names are printed on paper gored, adhered to a plastic globe. Die-cast, copper-painted meridian and hardwood base. Tap to illuminate. Auto shut-off.

This illuminated globe is named for Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd, an American aviator and polar explorer who claimed to have lead the first air expeditions to the North Pole and South Pole. Although his rival Roald Amundsen is now believed to have reached the poles first, Byrd remains a significant figure in the history of American exploration.

About Our Globes

National Geographic is proud to introduce our new line of globes for home, office, and classroom. Our floor-standing, tripod, and illuminated globes are all manufactured in the U.S. by Replogle, which has been making globes for more than 80 years. Each globe has more than 4,000 place names, printed on durable press-craft, plastic-impregnated paper.

Started in the founder’s basement at the height of the Depression, Replogle has grown to become the world’s largest manufacturer of fine globes. National Geographic’s award-winning cartography group was founded in 1915 and has helped shape our vision of the world through the art and science of mapmaking.

Each handsome globe comes with a certificate of authenticity.
