Women in a textile workshop in Nepal's Kathmandu Valley take scraps of silk left from the production of saris and weave them into a uniquely textured yarn. Knit or crocheted, they transform what would otherwise be discarded into cozy winter accessories that brighten the dreariest days. This set is decorated with beads and traditional mirrorred disks that are intended to ward off the evil eye.

This fabric will shed when first worn, due to the nature of the recycled silk scraps. Most customers have found that this decreases dramatically after the hat and scarf have been washed.

  • Hat: One size fits most.
  • Scarf: 6''W x 76''L.
  • Handmade in Nepal.
  • 100% silk.

Comments about Silk Sari Knit Hat and Scarf Set:

I should have read the reviews before wasting the high shipping charges. The scarf was damaged upon receipt with a two inch hole in it and the fringe was falling off. The hat would not fit a newborn. Smelled awful. I never had any silk item smell like this. Very disappointed that Nat'l Geographic would even offer to sell this item.

I bought 2 sets of this lovely hat/scarf set to use as Christmas gifts for two friends. I was excited when they arrived, but my excitement was short lived as the hat was soooo small (on both sets) that I was forced to return both sets to Nat Geo. The agent was very helpful when I phoned my concern. Am awaiting post paid return label by mail.

This was a beautiful scarf and hat set. But, the material is a bit scratchy and the hat is REALLY small considering I bought it for my teenage granddaughter and it barely fits her head - which is not large.

For many Tibetan women living in Nepal, the winter is a time to knit and crochet at home to earn extra income while they wait for their fields to be ready to harvest. Just before they return to their fields, Tibetan farmers celebrate Ongkor, a lively festival of horse races, dancing, and prayers for an abundant season. Brought to market by a small Tibetan-run company in Katmandu, and handmade by Tibetan farmwomen, this hip scarf and hat duo—inspired by the colorful celebrations of Ongkor—is a great way to stay both warm and stylish.

Silk saris get a second life in this innovative, handwoven jacket. Textile artisans in India use strips of vintage saris to form a loose basket-weave fabric. A typical sari can be anywhere from 10 to 30 feet long, so it’s a perfect source of vibrant fabric for up-cycled designs like this one. Colors may vary slightly as each jacket is individually made from hand-dyed fabric. Unlined. Front patch pockets.

Crafted in Gujarat, in western India, where a double-ikat style of weaving called patola is a specialty of local artisans. The jacket’s shaping comes from a layer of lightweight quilting. Sari patches will vary; reverses to solid red.

The ancient garment known as the sari has been a part of life on the Indian subcontinent for all of recorded history. Made using six yards of unstitched fabric, whether the finest indigo silk or the roughest clay-dyed cotton, the sari is a marvel of simplicity and beauty. This feather-light patchwork scarf is fashioned from vintage silk saris and comes in an array of brilliant jewel tones. Easy to wear and perfect to toss in your bag to dress up a travel outfit when it’s time to seek out a local café for dinner. Patterns will vary due to the vintage nature of the materials.

The designer who creates this lavish silk and cashmere-blend scarf draws inspiration from her collection of 250 antique, hand-carved wood printing blocks. For centuries, block-printed textiles have been a specialty of Indian artisans, especially in the northern part of the country. Here, rather than using the blocks as stamps in the traditional method, the designer traced some of her favorite patterns and created a serigraph of paisley and florals in azure hues. Made using an equal blend of silk and cashmere, the resulting scarf is supremely soft and drapes luxuriously.

Artisans in rural Thailand use silk left over from the making of ceremonial and festive clothing to create this one-of-a-kind yo-yo scarf. Each piece begins as a circle of fabric, which is hand-sewn into a three-dimensional “bud” and then connected edge to edge. No two scarves will be exactly alike.

The Paracas culture flourished in present-day Peru from the seventh to the first century B.C. When archaeologists discovered the Great Paracas Necropolis on the Pacific coast in the 1920s, it included a remarkably preserved woven textile, colored with natural dyes, featuring winged supernatural figures. The geometric garments worn by those shamanic figures are the inspiration for our ultrasoft baby alpaca and silk scarf, which uses similar earth-toned colors.

These colorful coasters capture just a small glimpse of the ornate folk art once found in the Forbidden City in Beijing. Each is embroidered with the fu symbol for good luck and prosperity, which many families use in decorations for Lunar New Year celebrations. Six embroidered coasters, two of each color, are presented in a silk gift box.

Each swatch carries with it the story of its former life—perhaps as a furisode that was worn to a wedding, or the shorter haori worn over a kimono. Harmonious patterns in shades of red are pieced together and trimmed with black silk. As these are made from vintage kimono, colors and patterns will vary. Knit by artisans in Arequipa, Peru, this pullover’s incredible softness comes from a blend of baby alpaca fiber and silk. The striped pattern and blue, brown, and gray hues are inspired by the terraced landscape of Machu Picchu. A local Quechua boy led Hiram Bingham to the site in 1911, and National Geographic research grantees explored and mapped the site over the next several years.
