The color palette for this natural jasper necklace was inspired by the range of hues and earthy textures found in the central Chinese countryside. But the design comes from Mandarin court necklaces that were popular during the early years of the Qing dynasty (1644–1911). These elaborate strings of beads and charms were said to be inspired by Tibetan mala beads given to Emperor Shunzhi by the Dalai Lama. This versatile necklace illustrates how something as simple as a strand of beads can connect cultures. Natural, undyed jasper beads and gold-plated brass spacers. Handmade in China.

      Comments about Jasper Court Necklace:

The photo shows an elegant combination of colored beads, and the description of the necklace specifically refers to the color palette as "the range of hues and earthy textures found in the central Chinese countryside." (very romantic) The photo shows hues that have a radiance to them and a variety and balance of delicate hues, brights & darks. The necklace that I received was made up of colors that were dark and dull. The "gold plated brass spacers" appeared thin and cheap. Also, the material used to thread the necklace did not allow the necklace to drape gracefully, instead there was an unsightly kink. Over all the quality was very poor. Granted, I believe it was Jasper, but it failed to live up to the photo and the description. I think this is crucial when someone is trying to find jewelry that will compliment their style and color of dress. I purchased this necklace as a gift for a family member, and returned it promptly.

        Comments about Jasper Court Necklace:

I was a little disappointed that the one I received as a gift is mostly dark greens. The photo shows a variety of colors and shades. I see from the comments that everyone was a little mislead by the catalog photo. If the colors reflect the China countryside, it must have been very dreary that day!

          Comments about Jasper Court Necklace:

This is a beautiful necklace but I wish it had a clasp. A clasp would allow one to use this as a two strand necklace.

                  Comments about Jasper Court Necklace:

This is a very beautiful necklace and it will work well with a great deal of attire.

I purchased it as a coordinating piece to a red shawl based on the photo.

Given that photos I had anticipated a bit of garnet in the necklace, but has no garnet and definitely has more of a blue/slate color palette

It is still a positively radiant piece.

Jasper, a form of chalcedony, has been used since ancient times for everything from arrow tips to official carved seals to snuff bottles that were highly collectible in 19th- and early-20th-century China. This triple strand of green, reddish, and brown jasper beads is interrupted throughout by pearls, and is inspired by the beaded necklaces that were popular in the Mandarin court of the late 17th century.

The image of a handwritten letter, folded and sealed with wax, perhaps handed to a valet or maid for delivery, is a common theme in depictions of the 19th century. Many people had seals engraved with their initials or family crest. This sterling silver necklace is cast from the impression of an antique seal that may have belonged to someone associated with seafaring. The design features an escalop, an emblem of safe travel. Leaping dolphins, regarded as guides, signify protection across the vast sea. And seagulls represent the welcoming sound of the shore after a long voyage.

A delicately woven sterling silver chain is the focus of this necklace, handcrafted in Thailand by silversmiths from the northern hill tribes. Silver jewelry is a rich part of hill tribe tradition, both making it and wearing it. During the 1st century AD, glass production in the Roman world drastically changed as the art of glass blowing was discovered and vessels for everyday use began to be made in aqua hues. Remains of many 2,000-year-old drinking glasses, vases, and jugs continue to be uncovered across the former Roman Empire, especially in Israel. Each glass medallion in this remarkable necklace was once part of an object that was created more than two millennia ago. It may have been part of a water vessel carried by a servant, or a bottle that held perfume or medicine.

According to Lithuanian legend, amber is the tears of the sea goddess, Jurate, who mourns her lover, the fisherman Kastytis. The thunder god, Perkunas, was enraged that a goddess fell in love with a mortal, and punished her by drowning Kastytis and destroying Jurate’s undersea amber palace, pieces of which are said to wash up on Baltic shores to this day. The story has been told in poems, ballets, and even a rock opera. Our necklace of Baltic amber slivers pays homage to this star-crossed romance.

Pearls hold an important place in the mythology and folklore of cultures across the world and throughout time. For the Chinese, they were the tears of dragons fighting in the sky. For Buddhists, pearls are the jewel in the lotus, which grants all desires. This gleaming strand of pearls in shades of pink, gold, lavender, and white can be worn as long necklace or doubled.
