One of the earliest maps of the new world, Johannes Ruysch's World Map first appeared among the Tabulae Novae in some copies of the 1507 Rome edition of Ptolemy's Geography. It includes: some of the best detail for India at the time; Africa; the Atlantic Ocean; an extensive view of South America; the islands of the West Indies; and a portion of North America. Ruysch's map improves upon its predecessors by better illustrating a number of features, most notably the easterly sea route to the Orient, which was of prime importance to early sixteenth-century Europeans.
