Comments about Men's Casa del Moral Alpaca Sweater:

As with many other Nat Geo sweaters, the colors are much more subdued than appear in the photo. The blue isn't light, but a dark slate; the wide white stripe is more like a dark taupe. All in all, the stripes are much less vivid than pictured. It's beautifully woven but very lightweight; definitely not a cold-weather sweater. Unlike some Nat Geo sweaters that are labeled alpaca & turn out only to be part alpaca, this one is 100%. I haven't decided whether to give it to my boyfriend or return it; it's nice, just not what I expected.

Knit by artisans in Arequipa, Peru, this pullover’s incredible softness comes from a blend of baby alpaca fiber and silk. The striped pattern and blue, brown, and gray hues are inspired by the terraced landscape of Machu Picchu. A local Quechua boy led Hiram Bingham to the site in 1911, and National Geographic research grantees explored and mapped the site over the next several years.

Indigenous Bolivian craftsman translate grecas—repeating geometric patterns—from the traditional garments of the Tarabuco region in this 3/4-zip pullover. The design is an interpretation of barroco mestizo style, in which indigenous and Spanish cultures have struck an aesthetic balance. This lightweight and cozy 100% alpaca sweater is handknit by artisans in Bolivia.

With its Mediterranean climate, high elevation, and strong winds, it’s not surprising that southeastern Bolivia’s Tarija region has a rich winemaking heritage. The earthy-hued stripes of our alpaca sweater are reminiscent of the rows upon rows of grapes that line these vineyards high in the Andean foothills. Handcrafted using alpaca yard from Bolivia and Peru. Features a quarter-zip collar.

Almost 500 years after the Spanish conquest, Andean culture is a strong blend of colonial art and architecture with indigenous Aymara and Quechua traditions. This warm and lightweight alpaca sweater, named after the Aymara word for flower, combines Baroque patterns found in Jesuit churches with warm, earthy colors inspired by the Altiplano and dry valleys of Bolivia.

The 26-mile Camino Inca, or Inca Trail, to Machu Picchu passes through small settlements, Inca ruins, cloud forests, and alpine tundra. The colors of this superfine alpaca sweater are inspired by that trek: orange zigzags for the distant mountain views, yellowish green for the stones that pave the trail, blue for the Urubamba River and the Andean sky.

Artisans knit and embroider this soft alpaca sweater with the baroque architecture of Puno, Peru, as inspiration. Puno’s nickname is the “folkloric capital of Peru” because of its many festivals, complete with indigenous costumes and lively dances. This cardigan fades from light to dark purple and has a hidden zip and round shawl collar.

In traditional Aymara textiles, patterns like the ones on this alpaca sweater represented khunu, or snowfall, against the dark night sky. Artisans working in a Bolivian workshop hand-loom this pullover using superfine alpaca yarn in five different colors to represent the stars, sky, and fields on a winter night.

In the Bolivian high plains, amid the snowcapped Andes, the pre-Inca Tiwanaku culture thrived for more than 500 years. So far only a fraction of the civilization's ruins have been excavated, yet it has yielded some of the earliest and more remarkably well-preserved textiles found in the Americas. Their art features highly abstracted figures, that originally expressed real places, animals, or cultural events but over time became icons with symbolic meaning. The high degree of abstraction in the art of Tiwanaku has inspired several art historians to compare their art to modern abstract movements, including Cubism. The intricate, interlocked geometric patterns on this alpaca fiber sweater are adapted from woven Tiwanaku tunics made around 500 A.D.

Stained glass, vitrales in Spanish, is an important part of barocco mestizo style, the blend of Spanish and indigenous architecture found throughout Bolivia. Congregations that couldn’t afford true stained glass would mimic it with paint. The hand-shaped leaded outlines of these intricate windows are the inspiration for the pattern on our gray-green 100% alpaca crewneck sweater.

Terrace farming has been part of the Peruvian landscape since at least 900 b.c. It makes even the steep Andes farmable, which, scholars agree, contributed to the success of pre-Inca civilizations like the Chavín, Moche, and Huari. This ancient striped landscape of rock, soil, and crops is the inspiration behind our textured sweater.

The Spanish vanquished the last Inca strongholds in the 16th century, but from the soaring heights of Machu Picchu, it is easy to imagine that the Inca empire still extends as far as the eye can see. The Inca understood their world as three interconnected parts: hanaq pacha, the world above, ukhu pacha, the realm below, and kay pacha, the world of the here and now. This complex cosmology found simple expression in the image of the chakana—the Inca cross—a graceful symbol that represented the entire Inca universe. Inspired by graceful lines of Machu Picchu and the chakana, this beautiful pastel sweater is knit on communal looms using 100% pure superfine alpaca yarn from the Peruvian city of Arequipa.
