The radio has great selectivity and very good directivity on both AM and FM. You can home in on a signal and block unwanted signals with ease. Although I like a bit 'hotter' sensitivity, I cannot argue with the great response that this radio has on AM and FM. That was a nice surprise. For the money I think this is one of the best radios available.

Had this type and brand of radio years ago and was excited to purchase and looked forward to hours of listening pleasure only to have short in dial followed by no function in about a month. it has only been given loving care with no drops, pitches or mistreatments. Even when working for the first few hours the audio quality was probably only that of a much less expensive radio. thought the National Geographic name would insure quality

Comments about Deluxe AM/FM Shortwave Field Radio:

The main two uses are at home and while traveling. We travel about 2+ months per year so it will be handy. I also like dialing in the shortwave bands and listen to networks around the world. I have only had the product a couple of weeks and have not done a full evaluation of it.

Comments about Deluxe AM/FM Shortwave Field Radio:

We live in the boonies and get very poor AM radio reception. This one gets a little better reception than most of the other ones we have tried for AM reception. We will probably search for the AM antenna to increase the reception. AM broadcasts are kind of rare, so it has been challenging. it is pretty complicated with lots of dials and buttons. Don't lose your directions.

Comments about Deluxe AM/FM Shortwave Field Radio:

I've only had the radio for 17 days. So I can't comment on the battery life. ( The four lithium batteries I installed are still keeping everything going.)The sound is excellent -- clear and adjustable. I prefer more treble than bass. I already own about 10 radios. But I needed a portable that I could handle easily and that had a larger speaker than my other small short-wave models. This Grundig works out perfectly. Classical music on FM and talk and news on AM come through with rich clarity.

Comments about Deluxe AM/FM Shortwave Field Radio:

I have used this radio for a dozen years. However, like all multifunction Grundig radios, do NOT lose the instructions, unless you like experimenting with all the knobs. My one complaint is that the clock has no alarm (or at least none I can find - yes, I lost the instructions), but instead of an alarm, it just powers on the radio. I will be travelling overseas shortly and can experiment with Short Wave (which means that the lack of a shortwave guide will be interesting). To the reviewer who complained that there is no SSB, if he wanted SSB, he should have bought an SSB radio. Besides, there are very few places in the world (outside of North America {North of Mexico}) which have SSB while, on the other hand, you can pick up shortwave darn near any place you want to go. This is, indeed, one of the better Grundig AM/FM/SW radios.

I THOUGHT THAT I COULD REPLACE MY OLD ZENETH TRANSOCEANIC. IT WOULD BE A MUCH BETTER RADIO IF IT HAD THE SSB RECEPTION CAPABILITY.ALL THE CONTROLS WORK WELL. IT IS WELL BUILT AND GREAT RECEPTION.
YOUR DESCRIPTION SHOULD INCLUDE THAT IT DOES NOT HAVE SSB RECEPTION.

This radio replaced a PAL radio that I had used for years. I replaced the PAL radio because I got tired of having to charge the battery every three to four days. The PAL radio has better sound than this radio, but sound is adequate and acceptable. I listen to the radio when I am eating or when I am working in the kitchen. It's an average radio at best.
