Carried by Irish gentlemen for centuries, the shillelagh walking stick was often a symbol of a young man’s transition into adulthood. Since the mid-19th century, it has come to represent Irish craftsmanship and hospitality. The artisan who carves these blackthorn- and hazel-wood walking sticks in his County Cork home collects the branches on his daily walks through West Cork forests. Finished with a rubber tip for traction. Each is unique.

These sticks are all unique, of course. The handle on mine is huge and I considered returning it, but then tried it out and it's fine. It's kind of like walking around with the head of a three-wood in my hand, but no wild beast will dare apporach if I wave this mighty club about. You should know that the carving of the handle is crude, as if done with an ax. The finish appears to be very durable. The shaft is as interesting as a dark-stained broom handle, which I suppose is necessary due to the pieces of wood used. (I have an English stick that has bark and is more refined in shape.) Solid, very usable walking stick.

Unfortunately the IRISH WALKING STICK sent to me did not look remotely like the article pictured in the catalog. The article shown in the catalog was finished well and "looked" professional. The article sent to me was rough and amateurish. National Geographic not only misrepresented the walking stick in but made me spend my time and additional money to return it. I cancelled the catalog.

        Comments about Irish Walking Stick:

I injured both knees years ago, and from time to time they "go out" and I need a bit of extra support. Knowing that I love all things Irish, a friend had this sent to me. I love how light yet sturdy it is; and the fact that it does NOT have a ferrule made it easy to cut down to my size. I like that it is so long, for those who are taller.

                        Comments about Irish Walking Stick:

I purchased this cane last year just for the beauty of a natural cane, never ever thinking is need it, I was wrong! I recently had an unexpected operation thus I was unable to walk. First I was using crutches but they just are annoying n more of a bother than not! So I remembered I had this lovely cane. I've used it now for two months get people asking me where I got it n what it is...it's very sturdy, yet not heavy. Can use either hand if needed. I've found holding the head of cane differently each day depending on my needs, which a regular cane would not be available to do. Detail is beautiful as finish is great! So glad I purchased this cane, it's just a wonderful piece of nature!!!

We were amazed at the quality and authenticity of this walking stick. My husband is from Ireland and could not have been more pleased with it.

I looked at others that were more expensive, but they did not match this product.

We bought this for my father-in-law's 90th birthday.
He needs some help walking and this was perfect for short distances. Since he is mostly Irish, he thought it was great and tells EVERYONE he meets when using it the story behind it. This was a great choice for a person who has everything he needs.

Each year at the end of winter, Scottish red deer stags shed their impressive antlers to begin growing them anew in the spring. Highlanders traditionally collected them to use as handles for knives and walking sticks. A polished piece of red deer antler, collected in the Scottish Highlands, forms the handle of our walking stick. The shaft is made of chestnut, with a walnut cap. Red deer are indigenous in Scotland, with depictions found as far back as sixth-century stone carvings by the medieval Picts.

As they walked along with their flock, Scottish highland farmers would collect branches and ramshorn to take home and carve during long winter evenings by the fire. Our wooden walking stick features a resin-handle replica of a traditional thistle design, Scotland’s national flower.

The Old Course at St. Andrews in Fife, Scotland, is considered by many to be the home of modern golf. The game was first played there more than 500 years ago. This collectible walking stick pays homage to the sport's most indispensable tool—a molded putter clubhead serves as its handle.

Sailors on whaling ships in the 18th century were usually at sea for a year or more. Many developed hobbies and practiced crafts to pass the long hour, often making presents for sweethearts and family at home. One of the most iconic “souvenirs” from these arduous voyages is scrimshaw, the name given to intricate etchings on whale teeth and bone, as well as walrus tusks. The etchings were darkened with soot or tobacco to highlight the design.

The sumac tree thrives throughout the continental United States. Native Americans and early settlers used it for food and medicine, and to make tools, musical instruments, and walking sticks like this one. Hand-finished in the U.S. from a single sumac with a section of root as the handle. No two exactly alike. A leather wrist strap and stable rubber tip make this a sturdy tool for any explorer.

This hearty forest green cardigan takes its inspiration from military-style Irish sweaters, often worn by volunteers who fought with the British in WWII. Although Ireland was neutral and relations with Britain were strained, thousands of men and women chose to join the Allied cause as members of the British Royal Army and Merchant Navy, or by working in British factories. Our contemporary version uses rich leather to enhance frequent wear points, ensuring years of rugged outdoor wear. Leather shoulders help keep expedition gear and luggage straps from slipping off. Front slash pockets add functionality and make this sweater an alternative to a jacket on milder winter days. Pure Irish wool, knit in Ireland.

For hundreds of years, women in the rural villages of the Aran Islands off the western coast of Ireland have knit natural wool sweaters for their fisherman kin. Although the myth that you can identify island families by the stiches in their sweater—like a Scottish tartan—isn't true, every knitter does have her own special patterns, passed down through generations of mothers and grandmothers. At weekly gatherings, they continually invented intricate new stitches.

Each pattern symbolizes an aspect of local fishing culture: Celtic rope for Irish pride; fisherman's cable for safety on the waters; basket stitch for a plentiful catch; and diamond, the shape of a fishing net, for success. The warm wool is renowned for its extremely soft hand, providing warmth and comfort without the itch of lower-quality fibers.

Lightweight and insulating, wool is one of the most travel-friendly natural fabrics available and shrugs off Donegal's morning mist with ease. Hand-knit in Ireland.
